Land Acknowledgment
As a virtual organization, we do not gather in one single physical space. Instead, our digital footprint spans the traditional, treaty, and unceded territories of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Turtle Island. We recognize that storytelling has deep and ongoing significance within many Indigenous communities and cultures, and that Indigenous peoples continue to be storytellers, knowledge keepers, artists, creators, and leaders today. We invite you to learn about the lands and communities connected to our team by exploring our biographies.
We recognize that acknowledging the land is only a starting point. We strive to approach storytelling with respect, reciprocity, humility, and a commitment to continued learning.
We are continuing to define what reconciliation means for Unsinkable and, importantly, how it is reflected in what we do. This means building meaningful and reciprocal relationships with Indigenous and Indigenous-serving organizations and communities; supporting and learning from Indigenous voices; and creating spaces where stories are shared by Indigenous people, rather than told about them.
It also means being intentional about the stories and perspectives we help bring forward. We want our work to recognize and celebrate the strengths, gifts, creativity, knowledge, leadership, joy, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, not only stories of hardship or injustice and to honour the fullness and diversity of Indigenous experiences, past and present.
As a storytelling organization, we believe we have a particular responsibility to consider not only whose stories are shared, but how they are shared, who has agency in telling them, and what relationships and responsibilities surround them. We see storytelling as a tool for connection and community building, but also for self-reflection and accountability. Our commitment is to keep learning, listening, building relationships, and translating that learning into how we tell stories, how we work with storytellers, and how we show up as an organization
