Wavelengths:
A Live Storytelling Showcase
Stories of resilience, courage, and hope, highlighting the strength found in vulnerability and the transformative power of community.
Wavelengths marks the very first cohort of Unsinkable’s Storytelling Program, “Unsinkable Stories” —a powerful, 8-week journey where a small group of individuals came together to explore, write and share their personal mental health stories.
Over two months, a small cohort of courageous participants came together virtually to uncover their stories with the support of dedicated mentors and the Unsinkable team. They learned about voice, structure, and purpose. But more than that, they discovered strength, confidence, and connection in community.
The program culminated in an unforgettable in-person event, where the five brave storytellers stood before an audience of 70+ friends, family, and supporters to share their stories out loud, many for the very first time.
It was a night of vulnerability, courage, and celebration. A moment that embodied what it truly means to be in community: to hold space, to listen deeply, and to honour each other's lived experiences.
Wavelengths set the tone for what’s possible when people are given the space and support to speak their truth.
And this is just the beginning.

Chukuka Ebuta
My name is Chukuka (Chuka) Ebuta, and I’m from Scarborough. Scarborough is marked by isolation, banding together and forming layered community. That mark has defined my life and my journey as a Mental Health Worker. When I’m not obsessing over music and basketball, I’m sharing my story of vulnerability and growth. Storytelling not only crystallizes our realities and our truths, it also connects us to other each other and a communal sense of understanding and purpose.

Michael James
Michael enjoyed several disparate careers from the performing arts to construction, network administration to being a programme manager at the Bernard Betel Centre, a senior citizens community centre in Toronto. It was there, in 2006 that he began volunteering for United Way Speakers Bureau, a passion that he continues to this day. He was awarded the inaugural “Innovation and Creativity Award” given by the United Way Bhayana Family Foundation for his work teaching computer skills to senior citizens. Michael was the Creative Director of Songs of the City, a major annual event for United Way held as a thank you to major donors in Toronto, St. Catherines, Halifax and New Brunswick. He was a recipient of the Volunteer Toronto Legacy Award in 2018 for that initiative. In 2024, Michael co-founded Regift Ontario, an Instagram campaign inspiring anyone who could afford it to donate their $200.00 Ontario tax rebate to an organization or cause of their choice. He volunteers at Ewart Angus SPRINT Home, a transitional home for Alzheimer and related dementia patients and was honoured as their Volunteer of the Year in 2025. Michael serves as President of the Board of Directors for his condominium. Michael found his true passion 15 years ago as a coach and mentor to aspiring storytellers. He subscribes to what Peggy Noonan wrote: “A speech is poetry: cadence, rhythm, imagery, sweep. A speech reminds us that words, like children, have the power to make dance the dullest beanbag of a heart.” But there is something more – storytelling is redemptive for both the speaker and the listener. And for Michael, mentoring storytellers is redemptive too.

Unsinkable Community Partner
“I felt lucky to be in the presence of such inspiring storytellers, and the beautiful community that Unsinkable has built. I shared with our team today how much more impactful it was to hear these stories in person, especially in a digital world where opportunities like this feel far and few. I admired the bravery and vulnerability of everyone that shared their story last night, including yourself! We are so grateful for our partnership with your team and look forward to continuing the work of amplifying transformative mental health stories”
Unsinkable Advisor
“great work last night on bringing this vision and dream to fruition! It was really lovely to witness speakers step into their ‘first time on stage’ moments and see them be empowered in their own voices.”
Event Attendee
“Wow what an event! It has stayed with us long after we left and brought up conversations about how this is the kind of work that needs to be valued more in the world. Sharing and listening to people express in a space designed with that intention. Grateful to have been a part of you and your team's vision and to see it in real time. It was special to see you in speech mode and leading by example. Loved it so much.”
