Pain Revealed, Power Gained
Storytelling Author: Penny Greening
Meet Penny: Penny Greening is the founder of Reframe Voices, a BC-based non-profit dedicated to educating parenting communities on preventing eating disorders — a silent killer that most often begins in childhood. Drawing on board experience in Clinical Psychotherapy, Education, and, of course, parenting, Penny and her team have developed tools and resources that help parents uncover the hidden roots of eating disorders and embrace models of prevention and awareness, rather than secrecy and shame. Learn more about the ‘Beyond Body Talk’ workshop at ReframeVoices.ca, or discover other ways to support families in need.
In this story-focused conversation, Mikaela Brewer (Publication Manager, Unsinkable) sits down with Penny Greening—a mom, professional communicator, and mental health advocate based in North Vancouver, BC.
Eating disorders prevalence is climbing in children and teens of every body type, gender, age, and socio-economic background. Penny knows this reality firsthand—and feels deeply compelled to help shift this dangerous curve as her life’s purpose. Since childhood, she has silently grappled with eating disorders and spent years untangling the complex web of biological, psychological, and social factors that shaped her experiences.
Her path has included depression in early parenthood, a breast cancer diagnosis at 42, and finding healing in weight training. Yet her foray into “naturals” bodybuilding triggered a relapse of her childhood eating disorders. The discovery of ADHD during perimenopause became a tipping point—arriving at exactly the right time for her to unlearn old narratives and begin practicing genuine self-compassion at 50.
Graciously and generously, Penny takes us through not only her story, but the wisdom, heart, and intention that led her to create Reframe Voices*: dedication to helping parents and guardians spot the signs of disordered eating early, rooted in how her love for her daughter has guided her toward loving herself.
Reframe Voices is a grassroots BC-based non-profit focused on equipping parents and guardians with tools and resources to begin the necessary and sensitive conversations that pave the way to eating disorders prevention and early intervention.
